Canadian Jewish Congress Ontario Region

Canadian Jewish Congress Ontario Region represents and acts on behalf of Ontario’s Jewish community.

CJC Ontario is committed to preserving and strengthening Jewish life in Ontario.  It works in cooperation with other Jewish organizations to ensure that Jewish services are provided to Jewish residents of communities throughout Ontario, including those with small populations.

CJC Ontario advocates on a broad range of public policy and social justice issues, supports the cause of Jewish education in Ontario, investigates and combats antisemitism and racism and promotes positive intergroup relations.

In partnership with other Jewish organizations, CJC Ontario affirms the centrality of Israel to Jews and to Judaism and fosters concern for the status of Jewish communities abroad.

In Ontario, we are particularly proud of the work we have done to both build new relationships and strengthen existing relationships with other ethnocultural communities. In addition to participating in programs that are developed with other community organizations – an excellent example of this is the manner in which the Jewish and Indo-Canadian communities came together to memorialize the victims of the Mumbai terrorist attacks – we are also a long-standing member of important organizations such as the Christian-Jewish Dialogue of Toronto.

CJC Ontario is also committed to supporting national initiatives such as the Security Infrastructure Pilot Program (SIP). This program was initiated by the federal government in response to ongoing advocacy by CJC and its national partners. As a result of this program, at-risk communities may now apply to receive financial support as they work to improve the security and safety of their schools, community centres and places of worship.

In partnership with UJA Federation of Greater Toronto, CJC Ontario worked closely through the mechanism of the Social Policy Table to create Transforming Lives, a document which outlines the strategies of the Jewish community of Ontario to confront the challenge of child poverty in this province. This report also formed the basis of a joint CJC Ontario-UJA Federation deputation to the government of Ontario’s Standing Committee on Social Policy. CJC Ontario is also a member of the Interfaith Social Assistance Reform Coalition (ISARC), an interfaith initiative to address poverty concerns in the province.

CJC Ontario remains committed to work for the welfare of the Jewish community in Ontario to ensure that members of our community are able to fully participate in and contribute to the life of this province.
