Parliament
The primary mandate of CJC’s Government Relations work is to articulate, and lobby for, CJC policy positions and objectives on issues of national and community significance on behalf of the Jewish community. The Jewish community of Canada’s is an important voice and it is crucial that it be heard effectively to provide our perspective on issues that shape Canadian society and the well-being of our community within it.
CJC is extremely well-respected on Parliament Hill and we tend to have excellent access to Members of Parliament and Senators across party lines, as well as to Hill staffers, senior public servants, the diplomatic corps; and other non-governmental organizations. Within the parliamentary sphere we direct much of our effort at key committees, departmental consultations and quasi-governmental bodies and agencies. Much of this is the result of nurturing longstanding relationships and developing new ones with key interlocutors.
As part of the mandate to keep the Jewish community and other interested parties au courant with what is happening in Ottawa, we publish an electronic feature called, Yesterday in Parliament. This resource highlights statements, debates, speeches and policy developments emanating from the House of Commons and Senate relating to issues on the Congress agenda and other matters of community significance, including Israel and the Middle East. You can subscribe to Yesterday in Parliament here. It is issued regularly when Parliament is in session.
Through our regions and local Jewish federations, Canadian Jewish Congress liaises with governments at the provincial and municipal levels.
One of the main federal government relations-related projects of current concern for CJC is the Canadian Parliamentary Coalition to Combat Antisemitism’s CPCCA Parliamentary Inquiry into Antisemitism in Canada.
