Excerpt from Rabbi Goldman’s serman

When Bnei-Yisrael left Egypt, their first stop was at a place named Succoth. This is not the place that our forefather Jacob named Succoth, but the meaning is the same. Jacob built small huts for his animals for shelter. Our Rabbis tell us that God, too, built Succoth for his children. Whether these were real huts/booths, or miraculous clouds that protected and sheltered them – the purpose was the same.

We must follow God’s compassionate ways, and the way we must do so in this generation is to protect and shelter those who are being massacared in Darfur.

For the last seven years, there is a genocide going on against the people in Darfur. We could have acted before, but now is the time to correct that. This Shabbat was declared as a Nation – wide shabbat for the realization that it is not to late to stop this genocide.

The way each and everyone of you can and must act, is to pressure the Canadian government to do whatever they can to stop this. As a people who suffered from Genocide, we must not turn a blind eye to this suffering.

The Talmud says that if a person could have done something to save another person and didn’t do it – he is liable for the fate of the one that was suffering.

Have a good week, Rabbi Yosef Goldman
